5 Free Security Betas You Can Download For Windows Vista

Given the torrent of criticism Microsoft has taken for Windows Vista's inelegant User Account Controls (UACs), one couldn't be blamed for assuming that the operating system is handicapped when it comes to security. But one would be wrong, very wrong.

The story that most everyone is missing is that, while we've been debating the strength of Vista's internal security features, an excellent crop of external security products has been taking shape. When the consumer version of Vista hits the market on Jan. 30, you'll be able to buttress your installation with a host of heavy-duty security add-ons from third-party vendors.

I've listed five which are available now as free betas (you may have to pay for the shipping versions, but you can download, install, and play with most of these now). The list comes via the keen posting eye of the moderator of the TechNet Vista security forum. I've slightly respun it with updated info, where necessary. (His original post is here.)

PC-cillin from Trend Micro. A beta version of PC-cillin 15.3 can be downloaded for free.

Windows Live OneCare. Free 90-day trial here.

CA, the former Computer Associates. Free CA Anti-Virus Beta For Vista here.

McAfee Total Protection For Small Business. Free beta of what's billed as an "integrated security software as a service -- providing virus, spyware, firewall, and now browser protection, as well as centralized management."

F-Secure Anti-Virus Beta For Vista. They call their free download the "7.0 Beta".

As for leading security vendor Symantec, it doesn't seem to be offering any free downloads. Their Vista information page is here.

Finally, Microsoft provides its own list of third-party security vendors planning products for Vista. However, this link doesn't go to actual products; it's just a company Web-site directory.

Of course, as a disclaimer I should note that I don't mean to make light of what Microsoft's designers have done as far as building security into the operating system -- stuff like sandboxing to prevent corrupt apps from taking the system down. I won't belabor the discussion about the overly intrusive UACs, about which there's apparently little that can be done at this point.

However, I am making the point that the antivirus and anti-spyware ecosystem surrounding Vista is evolving rapidly and positively -- a development that's all the more significant given Microsoft's initial inclination to lock out third party vendors from providing products for Vista. Fortunately, the folks at Redmond came to their senses, doing a quick about-face in mid-October, opening up the Vista kernel so Symantec et al could update their products. Our list of fine freebies is the result.

College students download for free
Ruckus Network, which distributes movies and music online to colleges nationwide, is expanding access to its ad-supported music download service to any U.S. college student.

Beginning this week, all students with valid university e-mail accounts will be able to use the service to download music to their computers.

The Herndon, Va.-based company aims to boost the number of college students who use its service to woo more age-appropriate advertisers. The company adopted the ad-supported business model about a year ago.

"Free and legal digital music has just become broadly available to the most active and engaged music consumer group on the planet," said Michael Bebel, Ruckus' president and chief executive.

Previously, the service was available only to students at universities that had entered into agreements with Ruckus.

The company estimates several hundred thousand students at more than 100 universities already use its service. Students outside Ruckus' network of affiliated universities will not be able to download movies, but will have access to Ruckus' more than 2.1 million tracks, which they can download to their computers for free.

To transfer audio files to a portable music player, however, users must pay either $5 a month or $19.99 per semester.

Nürnberg's Schäfer to join Stuttgart

The 1. FC Nürnberg goalkeeper Raphael Schäfer will leave the Bundesliga club at the end of the season to join rivals VfB Stuttgart on a four-year contract.

Agreement reached
Nürnberg sporting director Martin Bader said: "We have reached an agreement with VfB Stuttgart about Raphael's transfer. We regret losing our team captain, but Raphael wants to join Stuttgart and we accept that." Nürnberg had an option to extend Schäfer's contract for another year but decided to cash in instead with a sum of €2m being reported.

Contract withdrawal
The 27-year-old custodian joined Nürnberg in 2001 from third-division side VfB Lübeck and has played 80 Bundesliga and 33 second division games for the club to date. Stuttgart moved for Schäfer after withdrawing their contract offer to current keeper Timo Hildebrand. Stuttgart's sporting director Horst Heldt said: "We had different options but signed Schäfer because he is exactly what we have been looking for." Seventh-placed Nürnberg meet Stuttgart, in fourth, at the Frankenstadion in the Bundesliga this weekend.

Sale! sale! download ‘Kamasutra’ for free
A 19th century French translation of the “Kamasutra”, the ancient tome to erotic love by Indian sage, is currently the most downloaded of all e-books on an Internet website that provides 20,000 books for free and gets some two million hits each month.

The translation is by Pierre Eugene Lamairesse.

The website, www.gutenberg.net, also allows for the download of two Sanskrit translations of “Sri Vishnu Sahasranaamam”, by Karthik Krishnan and N. Srinivasan.

Michael Hart was still a student in 1971 at the University of Illinois when he started the project after obtaining access to a mainframe computer. Through friendly operators, he received an account with a virtually unlimited computer time valued at $100 million.

Hart said he wanted to “give back” this gift by doing something that could be considered to be of great value.

This particular mainframe was one of the 15 nodes on a computer network that would later become the Internet. Hart believed that computers would one day be accessible to the general public and decided to make works of literature available in electronic form for free.

He named the project for Johannes Gutenberg, the 15th century German printer who propelled the printing press revolution.

Today, there are some 20,000 free books in the Project Gutenberg Online Book Catalogue. The project also allows for the free download of books on a Palm organiser or smart phone. It estimates that some two million books are downloaded each month.

This project has also spawned the Distributed Proofreaders Network that allowed the proofreading of scanned texts to be distributed among many volunteers over the Internet.

Project Gutenberg’s web pages have won a number of awards and have often being featured in “Best of the Web” listings. Some 50 new e-books are added to the project, each week.

Besides English, which dominates, the other popular languages are French, German, Finnish, Dutch, and Spanish.

There is no selection policy dictating what texts to add. Instead, individual volunteers work on what they are interested in, or have available.

United make huge Hargreaves offer

Manchester United have raised their bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves to a massive £23 million.

The Daily Mail says the Bundesliga outfit are stalling on a deal which will allow the midfielder to move to Old Trafford before the end of the month.

United boss Ferguson views Hargreaves as the final piece in the jigsaw as his team chase honours on both the European and domestic fronts.

He will provide the bite missing since the departure of Roy Keane to Celtic as United seek to win the Champions League and swipe the Premiership crown from Chelsea.

TOMASSON MOVES ON LOAN TO VILLARREAL

Villarreal have signed Stuttgart striker Jon Dahl Tomasson on loan until the end of the season.

A statement posted on www.villarrealcf.es: "Villarreal and Stuttgart have agreed for the player Jon Dahl Tomasson to be given to the yellows (Villarreal) until the end of the season with an option to buy."

The 30-year-old numbers Newcastle, Feyenoord and AC Milan among his former clubs.

He will be presented to the media on Thursday.

(re-opens) "By loaning him to Villarreal, he will have the chance to get match practice in different surroundings and find his way back to his best form," said Stuttgart general manager Horst Heldt on the Bundesliga club's website.

"I am sure he will be successful."

Heldt admitted that Tomasson's prospects had been damaged when Giovanni Trapattoni was replaced as coach by Armin Veh last season.

"He has had a lot of injury problems to deal with over the first half of the season and has practically never got into any rhythm.

"It was his explicit wish to move to Spain."

HAMBURG LAY DOWN LAW TO DOLL

Hamburg coach Thomas Doll has been set a target of nine wins from the remaining 17 Bundesliga games to save his job - and the club from relegation.

Despite experiencing the worst-ever first half to a Bundesliga season in the club's history, Hamburg have decided to retain Doll for now.

However, he is under severe pressure to turn around a torrid campaign.

"It's certainly not too much to ask for nine wins in 17 games," said club chairman Udo Bandow in the Hamburger Morgenpost newspaper.

"With this squad in which there are 16 internationals, that has got to be realistic."

Hamburg are the only club remaining in the Bundesliga to never have been relegated since the league's inception in 1963.

But with just 13 points - and one win - in the opening 17 matches this term, that record could soon be broken.

Bandow admitted: "To be honest, we don't even want to contemplate it because it is so scary."

Doll's side have hardly made the best preparations in 2007 either.

A 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich was followed up by a mere 2-0 success over a local amateur club this week.

On Saturday, Doll's side travel to Arminia Bielefeld in their first Bundesliga fixture of the year.

ING Renault F1 Team unveils the new R27

ING Renault F1 Team roars into F1 with a spectacular Amsterdam launch for the R27 racer and aims for continued on-track success. The ING Renault F1 Team today nailed its new colours to the mast with the launch of the all-new R27 F1 car and a striking visual identity.

The ING Renault F1 Team today signalled its arrival in Formula 1 in style, with a spectacular media presentation in front of 600 VIPs and media in Amsterdam. Winners of consecutive Constructors’ world championships in 2005 and 2006, the team proudly unveiled new title partner ING and the striking new livery that will adorn the R27 cars throughout the 2007 season and beyond.

Renault F1 Team President Alain Dassas spoke of “exciting challenges” for the coming season, which will see the team’s championship campaign spearheaded by Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, in his third season with the team, and Finnish rookie Heikki Kovalainen.

“Double championship success in 2005 and 2006 has earned Renault its status as a major force in Formula 1,” asserted Dassas. “Our Formula 1 championship success is a benchmark of excellence that we aim to meet in every area of our operations. The Renault F1 Team’s performance culture reflects the ambitious objectives of our company-wide plan, Renault Commitment 2009. Consecutive double championships (Driver and Constructor) are concrete proof that Renault can win in a demanding environment where success demands quality, technical excellence and reliability.

“We must now live up to that reputation. The team will present a fresh face to the world with the arrival of ING as our new title partner, and we are proud to welcome this major, global financial institution to Formula 1. But on track, our challenge will remain the same: we will be asking our technical teams and drivers to make Renault a championship contender in 2007.”

After evaluating the three top teams in Formula 1, ING selected the Renault F1 Team as the perfect fit for its first global marketing campaign. With a reach of 60 million clients around the world, ING is seeking to exploit its significant investment in Formula 1, which will also include title sponsorship of the opening round of the season in Australia, to grow brand awareness globally. The Renault F1 Team’s track record as a proven winner was a decisive factor in their decision to sponsor the reigning world champions.

“Our Formula 1 programme is a global sponsorship initiative which will help us to enhance the awareness of one unified ING brand worldwide.” explained Tilmant. “Formula 1 is currently the best platform for a global sponsorship programme, as it has the potential to reach a broad customer base. We chose Renault for its track record as a high-performing team. We are convinced that teaming up with the Renault F1 Team fosters our objectives of encouraging teamwork, performance culture and permanent progress. I am confident that the ING Renault F1 Team will remain highly competitive in the coming years. I wish the team a lot of success in the coming season”.

The ING Renault F1 Team’s 2007 challenger has been christened R27. The new car represents an evolution of the design philosophy that won world championship success in 2005 and 2006. Every part of the car has been designed to meet demanding performance criteria that will enable the team to maintain its front-running performance. The aerodynamic packaging represents a further step forward over its predecessor in terms of overall efficiency, and innovative solutions have been employed in a number of areas to achieve improved performance under stable technical regulations. The car also features a new ‘instantaneous gearchange’ seven-speed gearbox, and has been designed with maximum set-up flexibility in order that its dynamic characteristics can be tuned to suit the Bridgestone Potenza tyres that will be used by every team in 2007.

“I am very proud of the team’s work on R27,” commented Technical Director Bob Bell. “We have enjoyed two seasons of remarkable success, but there is no complacency at all at Renault. Finding performance under stable regulations always obeys the law of diminishing returns, but our technical group has worked hard to innovate and ensure that the new car represents a genuine step forward over its predecessor in every area.

“The aerodynamic packaging is even more sophisticated than in previous years, while the gains from our new gearbox have been significant on track. We have kept the mechanical configuration of the suspension consistent in order to understand as thoroughly as possible the demands of the new Bridgestone Potenza tyres. We made a successful start to the adaptation process in the latter stages of 2006, and this will continue up to the first race. Everybody is expecting an extremely competitive season in 2007, and we are confident that our proven track record of world championship success will prove a considerable asset in that battle. The team is hungry to continue winning, and the R27 reflects that determination.”

The new car will be powered by the 2.4L V8 RS27 engine, which has been designed to the requirements of the ‘engine homologation’ regulations which will be in force for 2007 and beyond. Conceived to limit expenditure on engine development, these rules specify that no performance improvements can be made to the engine relative to the definitive specification that will be submitted to the FIA by 1 March 2007. The engine is based on the RS26 V8 engine that competed in the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix last season, and has been re-tuned in line with modifications permitted by the regulations for the new maximum rev limit of 19,000 rpm that will be imposed on all competitors.

“Our work for 2007 has been very different to previous years,” revealed the team’s Deputy Managing Director (Engine), Rob White. “Rather than designing a new engine, as we have done every season since 2001, the regulations have limited our work to optimising how the engine operates within the new 19,000 rpm rev limit. Our development work has been conducted within the framework of the new rules and although the engine will be called RS27, it contains just 10% new parts – compared to over 95% in previous years. However, it remains one of the most advanced competition engines in the world, operating in an extreme environment, with tiny margins for error. As always, our goal will be to achieve the only acceptable objective for a topline Formula 1 engine: zero-defect reliability. We have worked hard to blend this with competitive performance for the season ahead.”

The RS27 engine will also equip the cars of Red Bull Racing during the 2007 season, under the terms of a new engine supply agreement. The agreement specifies that both teams will use the same specification of engine, and a team of Renault F1 Team engineers will provide trackside support to Red Bull Racing. The new agreement marks the continuation of a tradition that begin in 1983, and which has seen customer Renault engines win 80 Grands Prix since that time.

“We are very much looking forward to the new challenge, which is part of Renault’s racing tradition,” explained the team’s Head of Engine Track Operations Denis Chevrier. “We will be looking to derive maximum benefit from every kilometre completed by a Renault engine, to improve the performance and reliability of all four Renault engines on track. But Red Bull Racing will remain a competitor like any other for the ING Renault F1 Team. We have established very clear operating principles for the new relationship, and look forward to an honest, trusting collaboration with our new partners.”

The R27 completed its first shakedown in Jerez on 16 January, and the team tested at the same circuit from 17-19 January with two brand new chassis – a first for the team, that provides a decisive advantage in allowing both race drivers to accumulate maximum mileage in the R27 before the opening race of the season. The team completed over 2000 km in testing, with only minor early-life reliability problems. Following their first test at the wheel of the new car, 2007 race drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen are already feeling positive about their chances for the new season.

For Giancarlo Fisichella, 2007 will be his third year with the team – and the opportunity to deliver on the promise glimpsed during the previous two seasons. Having been an integral part of the team’s championship successes in 2005 and 2006, the Italian will aim to add racewinning consistency to his natural speed in order to become a regular contender at the front of the field. An unquestionable asset will be his extensive Formula 1 experience, as he will be the third most-experienced driver in the field in 2007.

“The spirit of the team is strong after two fantastic seasons, and we are feeling optimistic,” explained the Italian. “The team has shown its confidence in me for the new season, and I am determined to repay that in the best way possible, out on track. The team knows how to design winning cars capable of fighting for the championship. That means there is a fantastic opportunity for me this year, and I am determined to make the most of it.”

Alongside Fisichella will be new team-mate Heikki Kovalainen, one of the brightest young talents in Formula 1. The Finn has completed over 30,000 km in testing during recent seasons, and has proved his racing credentials as a member of the Renault Driver Development programme since 2002. The team has now offered him the rare opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut in a championship-winning team.

“I am very excited about the new season,” commented the Finn. “But I know that so far, I have achieved nothing at all. I pushed myself very hard last year in testing, to show the team that I was capable of doing the job. They had faith in me, and now it is my turn to deliver on that promise. It is a big privilege for a rookie driver to start his career in a race-winning car, and I am focused on doing it justice. This will be a season where I have a lot to learn, and I need to keep mistakes to a minimum. There will be pressure, but that will come from me, because I always drive myself to improve in every area. Overall, I am expecting 2007 to be a fantastic year for me. I am in the best possible place to start my career, and my focus is on preparing as thoroughly as possible for the first race – and the sixteen to come after that.”

The race driver duo will be aided by newly-recruited test drivers Nelson Piquet Jr. and Ricardo Zonta. They will bring a valuable blend of youthful talent and professional experience to the team, as it manages the transition to Bridgestone tyres while simultaneously building for the future. At the ING Renault F1 Team, all the ingredients are in place to start a new winning era, under new colours. An exciting new title sponsorship and new faces in the driver line-up signal the beginning of a new era, but the foundations are firmly rooted in the title-winning success of recent seasons.

“This is no year of transition for the ING Renault F1 Team,” emphasised Managing Director Flavio Briatore. “We have always said that the team is what matters, and that success comes from the team spirit that unites us. 2007 is a fantastic opportunity to prove exactly that. There are some big changes for this season, not just at Renault but throughout the grid. We believe in our choices, and we are confident that they will help us achieve more success in 2007. It will be a year of tough competition at every level. Those are the conditions that allow the best teams to shine, and that is exactly what we intend to do.”

Formula 1 in India: Delhi overtakes B’lore
Fasten your seatbelts for a ride at 300 plus km/h. Vroom, and soon the F1 cars may be burning rubber on a track closer home, most likely in the National Capital Region. Yes, the world’s premier motor racing federation, Formula One, is touching down on saddi Dilli. A formal announcement is expected in March.

F1’s India plans-in a limbo for long-seem to have hit the fast track now with liquor baron Vijay Mallya at the steering wheel. Mallya's flagship Kingfisher brand is likely to be one of the main sponsors of the sport in India, and the man seen as a desi version of Richard Branson is negotiating matters with F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone.

After conducting its final reccee on four states-Karnataka, Maharashtra, Haryana and Punjab-the team from F1 seems to have settled on a location close to the Capital city. The newly modernised international airport in Delhi, good roads and a whole host of new hotels coming up in the region helped Delhi score over rival cities.

Mallya may be keen to bring F1 to the Capital but his own state Karnataka has not given up on its F1 dreams yet. Sources indicate the state is taking the lead in luring the F1 supremo. A leading real estate promoter in Bangalore, boasting of a land bank of over 2,000 acres in and around the city, has emerged the key player currently in talks with Mr Ecclestone. On one of his visits to the country last year, Mr Ecclestone had a breakfast meeting with this family and showed interest in the land parcels shown to him.

Who’s Who of Formula 1 on their way to Abu Dhabi for F1 Festival
The Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) today announced the first wave of teams and drivers to confirm their attendance to showcase their cars and skills at Abu Dhabi’s F1 Festival on Saturday, February 3rd, 2007.

The following teams have confirmed that they will attend: McLaren, Honda, Toyota, BMW-Sauber, Super Aguri, Toro Rosso, Spyker and Red Bull.

Commenting on the announcement, Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nayhan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, said, "We are delighted at the caliber of the line-up of F1 talent confirmed to come to Abu Dhabi for the F1 Festival, making this event the largest gathering of teams and drivers outside of a Grand Prix. This is just the first raft of confirmations. We are encouraging everyone to come to the venue early on February 3rd and see their heroes in action." As excitement grows over the Festival, teams from all over the world are preparing to bring the thrill of F1 to the people of Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Already confirmed are: "McLaren’s Fernando Alonso - Formula One’s youngest champion, and arguably the finest driver of the new generation. Alonso possesses all the qualities of the great drivers and with consistent excellence he finds exactly the right blend of pace, intelligence and raw aggression. His speed and commitment have not been dimmed by his success and there can now be no question whatsoever that even at such a relatively early stage in his career, he belongs in F1’s pantheon.

"Honda’s Rubens Barrichello - A product of the Sao Paulo kart scene, Barrichello came to the attention of many F1 managers in 1990, as a 17-year old. Fourth places in the Monaco and Hungary Grand Prix in 2006 put him on track to seventh in the 2006 Drivers’ Championship.

"Toyota’s Ralf Schumacher - Has earned his place in Formula One thanks to a handful of junior formulae titles. His career bears marked similarities to that of brother Michael, courtesy of the same management team, and his driving, too, has shown flashes of the same brilliance.

"Toro Rosso’s Scott Speed - 1993 marked the last occasion an American competed in F1 with Michael Andretti. At the same time, taking his first steps in karting was a ten-year old Andrew Scott Speed destined to be the next U.S. born driver to take up the challenge of grand prix racing. His first national karting title followed in 1995 and he continued to enjoy success in this discipline.

"Spyker’s Christijan Albers - Enters F1 for the first time in 2007. Albers enjoyed his first taste of success in 1997 when he was crowned the Dutch National Kart Champion before moving to the German F3 Championship the following year.

"Red Bull’s Michael Ammermueller - This could be the year Red Bull’s achievement matches their high profile. The team will have a new car designed under the guidance of the brilliant Adrian Newey and now powered by a Renault engine. With that kind of muscle, it is little surprise that many are tipping Red Bull to win their first race in 2007.

Activities around the four kilometre F1 Festival street circuit will begin at 9am. The track will run from the Emirates Palace, along Abu Dhabi’s Corniche through to the Marina Mall. Additional details on event times, road closures and parking facilities will be announced shortly

Justine Henin-Hardenne returns to tennis in Paris
World number one ranked woman tennis star Justine Henin-Hardenne makes her comeback to sport in Paris next month and she explained absence, was as suspected, due to her marriage problems.

Justine Henin-Hardenne will make her return at the Open Gaz de France, which starts on 5 February.

Belgian tennis player Justine Henin-Hardenne, 24, had withdrawn from the Australian Open "for family reasons" and the press and world of tennis had speculated that she and husband Pierre-Yves Hardenne, whom she married in 2002, had broken up.

Some news agencies even reported that she was going to divorce from her husband and go back to her maiden name, "Justine Henin."

"Pierre-Yves and I have decided to separate - the reasons are personal," Justine Henin-Hardenne confirmed on her website.

Justine Henin-Hardenne is back but she will, however, lose her world number one ranking because she has not defended the points she gained at last year's Open.

'Cardio Tennis' Offers New Workout
It looks like just another tennis workout as balls sail by and sometimes directly at pro instructor Tony Palafox.

But the plastic cones and the rope ladder along either side of the court suggest otherwise. This is "Cardio Tennis," a group class that combines traditional tennis practice with other endurance-building exercise.

On a recent brisk morning at a YMCA tennis court in Atlanta's trendy Buckhead neighborhood, three tennis players had a workout with Palafox, a former pro tennis player from Mexico City. Palafox has trained other professionals, including U.S. tennis champion John McEnroe.

"Did John McEnroe do this?" asks 42-year-old Caroline McCrary during pre-workout arm stretches and moving sideways in a circle with the group.

"Pros should do it _ it is good fitness," says the 70-year-old Palafox. Today's pros, he says, have access to personal trainers to build their stamina.

For everyone else, Cardio Tennis provides similar benefits, Palafox says, because it uses aspects of a regular tennis workout _ hitting balls _ with footwork exercises designed to build endurance.

Unlike a regular game of tennis, Cardio Tennis is focused on fitness and less on hitting great forehands and backhands. The program has 1,500 workout sites in 48 states, Puerto Rico and 25 countries. It started in September 2005 by the Tennis Industry Association as a way to get more people involved in the sport. Classes run from $8 to $20 per session, depending on the club. Palafox's YMCA charges $10 for members.

"When lower-skilled players go out and play with one another they are not hitting many balls _ they are chasing many balls. That doesn't get your heart rate up," said Michele Krause, national Cardio Tennis director for the Tennis Industry Association. "In Cardio Tennis, a pro is controlling the activity, you're hitting tons of balls ... and you have a great ability to stay in your heart-rate range for the recommended period of time."

Organizers claim the workout offers cardiovascular benefits because all the activity in each workout allows participants to hit their aerobic training zone, which is between 65 percent and 85 percent of their maximum heart rate. The workout also improves a player's tennis game because players get lots of tennis practice and tips on how to improve with instructors.

Cardio Tennis means more of a "total body" workout than just tennis alone or other activities such as running or cycling, said Randy Braith, director of the an exercise physiology lab at the University of Florida, who is not involved in the Cardio Tennis program. Both upper and lower body get a workout, he said.

"I can run a gazillion miles, but it's hard," McCrary says during the 45-minute workout's only down time _ when Palafox exhausts his ball hopper and players break to pick them all up again.

"We look forward to picking up the balls," jokes Cam Fenton, 49, of Atlanta.

First, Palafox does stretching exercises with his group. Then he hits three or four volleys to a class member, who returns the serves, then runs to the side of the court to do jumping exercises over the rungs of the rope ladder, or footwork exercises around the plastic cones. Then it's back to the volley line and hitting balls again.

They work on their forehand and backhand, lobs, baseline shots and even close to the net. A workout session usually includes three sets of hitting exercises, with two breaks of picking up tennis balls in between.

Fenton started taking Cardio Tennis last summer and says she can burn about 600 calories per workout.

"I like to play tennis and try to get cardio in everyday," Fenton said. "Your heart rate jumps up huge because you're running."

Baros and Carew trade places

Olympique Lyonnais have signed striker Milan Baroš from Aston Villa FC, with fellow forward John Carew travelling in the opposite direction.

Houllier factor
The move reunites the Czech international with Lyon coach Gérard Houllier, the manager who had brought him to Liverpool FC from FC Baník Ostrava during the 2001/02 campaign. "He is eligible for the UEFA Champions League and has lots of experience and motivation," Houllier said of his acquisition, who will have a three-and-a-half year contract at Stade Gerland. Norway target man Carew, 27, has committed to Martin O'Neill's Aston Villa for a similar period.

Mixed fortunes
Baroš spent three full seasons at Anfield, including the triumphant UEFA Champions League run of 2004/05, before joining Liverpool's Premiership rivals Villa for a fee in the region of €9m at the start of last term. However, the 25-year-old failed to reproduce his prolific national-team form – he has 30 goals in 53 games for his country – at the Birmingham-based club. Baroš has been limited to ten league starts in 2006/07, yielding a solitary strike, and he had long been the subject of transfer speculation. He is the French champions and Ligue 1 leaders' second January signing after CS Sedan-Ardennes full-back Nadir Belhadj, who has been loaned back to Sedan.

Fresh start
Carew leaves Lyon with a championship medal to show for his 18-month spell in French football following previous stints with Vålerenga IF, Rosenborg BK, Valencia CF, AS Roma and Beşiktaş JK. In all, he scored ten goals in 35 Ligue 1 outings. His new team, who according to reports in France will also receive cash for Baroš, sit 14th in the Premiership.

Lyon stumble to defeat again

Olympique Lyonnais slumped to their second Ligue 1 defeat in succession and their first of the season at home when they lost 2-1 to FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

Bordeaux bubbling
Bordeaux, runners-up to Lyon last season, opened the scoring on three minutes with a penalty by Argentine midfielder Pablo Francia after striker Jean-Claude Darcheville was brought down by Rémy Vercoutre, who was deputising for the injured Grégory Coupet in the Lyon goal. Playmaker Johan Micoud doubled the visitors' advantage with a header on 27 minutes before Brazil forward Fred reduced the arrears from close range on 64 minutes.

Lyon falter
Lyon have now lost three out of 21 games but still comfortably top the Ligue 1 standings on 50 points. Coach Gérard Houllier's team remain ideally placed to become the first side from a major European league to win six consecutive titles but they appear to be slowing down after a fantastic start to the season.

Marseille second
Franck Ribéry struck twice to earn Olympique Marseille a 3-1 home victory against AJ Auxerre in a match played behind closed doors. The hosts, who moved into second place, went ahead in the ninth minute when playmaker Ribéry scored with a 25-metre drive. Polish striker Ireneusz Jeleń levelled eight minutes later when he poked home a Benoît Cheyrou corner. Ribéry made it 2-1 after being set up by Djibril Cissé in the 38th minute and Nigerian defender Taye Taiwo wrapped up the win with a powerful free-kick with two minutes to go.

Lens lose
Marseille took over second from RC Lens on goal difference after the northern side lost 1-0 at FC Lorient thanks to Rafik Saifi's winner. Jean Makoun got the only goal for LOSC Lille Métropole as they moved up to fourth after managing a 1-0 home victory against Paris Saint-Germain FC, who are still looking for their first league win under new coach Paul le Guen. Goals by Jimmy Briand and Etienne Didot earned Stade Rennais FC a 2-0 win at AS Monaco FC.

Valenciennes held
In other results, Valenciennes FC drew 1-1 with Le Mans UC 72, as did FC Sochaux-Montbéliard and CS Sedan-Ardennes. ES Troyes Aube Champagne secured a 1-0 home win against FC Nantes Atlantique and Toulouse FC managed the same result away to OGC Nice. AS Nancy-Lorraine host AS Saint-Etienne in Ligue 1 on Thursday.

Thousands to play table tennis in Tiananmen
Tiananmen Square, the world's largest public square, may become the largest table tennis stadium as well when 10,000 people turn out to play table tennis this summer.

As part of the capital's sixth sports festival, the municipal sports bureau has decided to hold a table tennis tournament at the square in June or July, Sun Kanglin, head of the bureau, said on a radio programme. The event is expected to draw at least 10,000 citizens.

'We plan to hold 347 sports events this year and they are open to every citizen. But I think nothing is more exciting than playing pingpong at Tiananmen Square,' Sun was quoted by Tuesday's Beijing Daily Messenger.

Sun said his bureau was working on the specific agenda for the competition. To qualify to play at Tiananmen Square, citizens will first have to win in a series of playoffs at the condominiums where they live.

Beijing is also planning to build new sport facilities this year, especially in rural areas. According to Sun, 90 percent of the city's 3,947 villages will have sports facilities by the end of this year.

Table tennis, or ping pong in Chinese, is as popular in China as basketball in the US. Chinese athletes have won more than 130 table tennis world championship medals since Rong Guotuan won the men's gold medal at the World Table Tennis Championships in 1959.

AJAX BOOK CUP PASSAGE

Ajax are through to the last eight of the Amstel Cup after a comfortable 4-0 win over Eerste Divisie club Haarlem FC on Wednesday.

An eighth minute own goal by Ray Frankel set the defending champions on their way, with further goals by Leonardo Santiago (34) and Kenneth Perez (40 and 90) sealing the victory.

In Enschede, Mike Zonneveld struck a 90th minute winner to help high-flying NAC Breda overcome FC Twente 2-1 at the Arke Stadion.

South African striker Glen Salmon open the scoring after 31 minutes for the visitors, before Sharbel Touma equalised from the penalty spot in the 75th minute.

However, it was not enough as Zonneveld's strike meant an eighth consecutive game without defeat for Ernie Brandts team.

Elsewhere, another Eerste Divisie side crashed out with Ricky Kruys' 68th minute winner enough for FC Utrecht to overcome RBC Roosendaal at the Nieuwe Galgenwaard.

In Wednesday's final game, Luwamo Garcia scored an extra-time winner to help RKC Waalwijk come from behind to beat Sparta Rotterdam 3-2 at the ENECO stadium.

Inderlindo Moreno Freire had put the home team ahead after just 10 minutes, before Hans van de Haar (18 and 39) handed the advantage back to the visitors.

Yuri Rose (58) brought the Rotterdammers back into the game before Garcia scored what proved to be the winner in the 96th minute.

Lippi Resigns After Winning World Cup
Italian national team coach Marcello Lippi Wednesday resigned from his job, three days after leading the Azzurri to win their fourth World Cup in Germany. "After an extraordinary professional and personal experience, which I lived leading an outstanding group of players with the help of a first-rate staff, I feel that my role at the helm of the Azzurri is over," Lippi said.

"I therefore informed FIGC (the Italian football federation) of my decision to quit my post as technical director at the end of my contract. I want to thank FIGC for the confidence they always showed during these two years, which have been topped by an achievement that will remain forever in the history of Italian football and in the heart of all fans."

Giancarlo Abete, a FIGC official who led the Italian delegation at the World Cup, said that Lippi already told him during the group stage that he was going to quit after the World Cup, regardless of the team's achievement at the tournament.

Abete thanked Lippi "for his professionality and for his ability to lead the team at a moment of great difficulty that we all know well."

A wide-ranging scandal that since early May has been shaking Italian football has in part involved Lippi and his son Davide, a footballers' agent, in an alleged scheme to control the transfer market.

The coach reacted angrily to suggestions that he should quit his job before the World Cup and had some heated exchanges with reporters during the tournament.

On the pitch, the 58-year Lippi steered the Azzurri to 18 wins, nine draws and two defeats since he took over the squad in June 2004 replacing Giovanni Trapattoni. The 5-3 penalty shoot-out win over France in Sunday's World Cup final sealed an unbeaten run of 25 official games, the Azzurri's second best ever.

His coaching career began in 1982 with the youth team of Sampdoria where had played for nine seasons. He debuted in the Serie A in 1989 with Cesena and arrived on the bench of giants Juventus in 1994.

At Juve, Lippi won five national titles, one Champions League and one Intercontinental Cup.

Former international Roberto Donadoni, 42, is being rumoured as his likely successor, but FIGC are said to be considering also Alberto Zaccheroni and youth team coach and 1982 world champion Claudio Gentile.

AC Milan Await Ronaldo As His Row With Real Worsens
AC Milan appear ready to welcome Real Madrid star Ronaldo as the Brazilian wrestles to free himself from the contract tying him to the Spanish powerhouse, La Gazzetta dello Sport reported Monday.

Football agent Ernesto Bronzetti was quoted as saying that "the key to everything is Ronaldo."

The Phenomenon's long-rumoured farewell to Real became more likely at the weekend after coach Fabio Capello left him at home as the Whites won their Spanish La Liga match 1-0 at Mallorca.

Bronzetti Monday was to join the player's personal agent, Fabiano Farah, in a negotiation that appears to be quite costly for the Brazilian trying to end a contract set to expire in June 2008.

"It is a matter that Ronaldo has to solve himself. No one else can do it," Bronzetti said, adding that Milan "await an answer from Ronaldo more than from Real Madrid."

Milan last week offered Ronaldo the same 6 million euros (7.8 million dollars) per season he makes at Real while allowing him to cash in the entire earnings from sponsoring contracts.

Since arriving in Spain from Inter Milan in 2002, Ronaldo has shared the 11 million euros (14.3 million dollars) he earns each year from his image rights with Real Madrid.

Beside the Phenomenon, the Milanese Devils are also hoping to snatch defender Massimo Oddo from Lazio before the winter transfer market ends on January 31.

The 30-year-old appears set leave the Rome club, which, however, are not inclined to let him go unless Milan settle for a transfer fee of 9 million euros, plus the arrival in Milan of midfielder Pasquale Foggia.

In a move similar to that of Real, Lazio sidelined Oddo for the home clash with Milan at the weekend - a tie that ended with a dull 0-0 draw.

"Only those who are happy to do it can play for Lazio," said club president Claudio Lotito. "Those who aren't can take a seat on the stands."

Both Lazio and Milan, respectively on 27 and 24 points from 20 games, struggle to secure a Champions League berth after receiving point penalties in a match-rigging trial held in the summer, which involved also Fiorentina, on 19 points, and second-last Reggina.

Phoenix 131, Minnesota 102
Amare Stoudemire scored 25 points and the Phoenix Suns ran away from the Minnesota Timberwolves Sunday, 131-102, to run their winning streak to 13 games.

Phoenix is two games from tying its franchise record for consecutive games won, a mark set earlier this season. Since starting the season 1-5, the Suns have won 31 of 34 games.

Sunday's game was no contest, as Minnesota played without its two leading scorers -- Kevin Garnett and Ricky Davis. Both were serving one-game NBA suspensions.

The Suns scored 31 of 33 points at one stretch in the third period and led 102-71 going into the fourth quarter. Phoenix was able to hold many of its starters out during the fourth quarter.

Stoudemire's 25 points came on 11-of-14 shooting as the Suns shot 56.8 percent for the game.

Leandro Barbosa had 20 points off the bench. Shawn Marion had 17 points and 20 rebounds, and Steve Nash also had a double-double with 16 points and 11 assists.

Minnesota got 25 points from Randy Foye, who hit 5-of-6 three-point tries.

San Antonio 99, Philadelphia 85
Tim Duncan had 17 points and 15 rebounds Sunday, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 99-85 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Spurs led throughout en route to their sixth win in eight games. San Antonio used a 9-0 first-quarter run to build a 24-10 lead, ran the lead to 30-15 by the end of the quarter, and led by 20 at halftime.

Philadelphia cut the deficit to 13 in the third period, but another 9-0 San Antonio run in the fourth quarter put the game away.

Brent Barry led the San Antonio attack with 23 points. The Spurs got 12 points from both Manu Ginobili and Robert Horry.

Andre Iguodala had 20 points to lead the Sixers, who finished with six players in double figures -- including Samuel Dalembert with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Hoffman Claims First PGA Title At Hope
Charlie Hoffman tied for first with an eagle and won the playoff Sunday to claim his first PGA title at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in California.

Hoffman birdied No. 17 and then carded an eagle on 18 to end up tied with John Rollin after 90 holes. Hoffman came back with another birdie on 18 -- used as the playoff hole -- to notch his first tour championship.

The hot finish gave Hoffman a 1-under 71 on the day, making him one of the few players to break par in windy conditions. Rollin finished at 1-under 73, using a birdie at 18 to match Hoffman at 17-under 343.

Rollin's drive on the playoff hole ended up in a bunker and he had to pitch out into the fairway. Hoffman had found the middle of the fairway with his drive.

Both golfers hit shots about 30-35 feet from the hole, and both two-putted -- but Hoffman's second putt was good for a winning birdie.

The leaders after the fourth round saw their scores balloon. Justin Rose shot 4-over 76 to wind up in third place, and Lucas Glover turned in an 80 to slip to a tie for 13th.

Feyenoord thrown out of UEFA Cup
FEYENOORD has been thrown out of the UEFA Cup as a penalty for the violent scenes that marred the Dutch club's November group match against Nancy.

Up to 600 Dutch fans ransacked parts of the eastern French city of Nancy before the November 30 game, which Nancy won 3-0 to join Feyenoord in the last 32 of the cup.

The match was then temporarily halted when visiting supporters ran riot in the stands, raining down seats on stadium stewards.

Three supporters of the Dutch club subsequently received prison sentences ranging from two weeks to a month for their part in the disturbances.

Feyenoord was due to face English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur next month in the last 32 of the tournament.

UEFA, the European governing body, said it would announce its decision about the London club's opponents next week.

"This is a huge slap in the face for the club," Feyenoord financial director Onno Jacobs said.

"It will have enormous consequences, both sporting and financial.

"We'll lose ticket receipts, TV rights and the possibility of progressing in the competition.

"Our true supporters are the real victims of this decision.

"They are paying the price for the faults of individuals who have nothing to do with the club and from whom Feyenoord has always distanced itself."

UEFA said in a statement that it had decided to toughen the original sentence against the club.

"The UEFA appeals body has considerably toughened the sanction against the Dutch club Feyenoord following the crowd disturbances by its fans at the UEFA Cup group stage match between French club AS Nancy-Lorraine and Feyenoord on 30 November 2006," UEFA said.

"The UEFA appeals body has excluded the club from all UEFA competitions for the season 2006-2007, including the current UEFA Cup in which the club had progressed from the group stage to face England's Tottenham Hotspur FC in the round of 32.

"The initial fine of 200,000 Swiss francs ($203,000) was reduced to 100,000 Swiss francs.

"The decision follows an appeal made by UEFA (allowed under article 50 of the disciplinary regulations where 'the parties directly concerned and UEFA have the power to appeal') after an initial decision by the UEFA control and disciplinary body.

"Their decision had consisted of a fine of 200,000 Swiss francs and a suspended sentence of two matches behind closed doors, on probation for three years.

"The appeal by Feyenoord against the original sanction of the UEFA control and disciplinary body was also rejected.

"Feyenoord were also ordered to contact AS Nancy-Lorraine regarding settlement of the damages."

Feyenoord, which stands to lose around two million euros ($3.2 million) in ticket sales for the tie against Spurs, can now appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sport to have the decision overturned.

Feyenoord, the 2001-2002 UEFA Cup winner, has been cursed by violent fans in recent years.

In 2005, the club had to play one match behind closed doors after trouble broke out in a tie against Sporting Lisbon, with the Portuguese club's goalkeeper, Ricardo, injured by a missile thrown from the stands.

Dutch league matches with bitter Amsterdam rival Ajax also attract violent elements.

Unions fear Cup exploitation
ORGANISERS of the 2010 football World Cup must not exploit high levels of unemployment in South Africa and build stadiums on the cheap, the biggest international union federation said overnight.

Ten stadiums in nine different cities are due to either be built or substantially revamped at least a year ahead of the tournament, the first time the world's biggest sporting event has been held in Africa.

In a country which has hundreds of thousands of illegal migrant workers and unemployment estimated to be above 40 per cent, cheap labour is not in short supply.

Authorities in South Africa have repeatedly pledged to meet deadlines set by football's world governing body FIFA, whose president, Sepp Blatter, has voiced concerns that the "picks and shovels" have yet to swing into action.

But leaders of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), here for the annual World Social Forum, want the whistle blown on contractors who cut corners to get the job done on time and within budget.

"Football is the world's favourite game. There are millions of people who watch an event such as the World Cup but what the people have no idea about is how the stadiums are constructed," said Andrea Maksimovic, international co-ordinator of a body which groups 306 unions from around the world.

"Forty-six per cent of the people in South Africa have no work. South Africa expects the World Cup will give work to 300,OOO people so it's an important asset."

The ITUC said football fans from around the world need to be prepared to put pressure on all parties to ensure that workers are not exploited.

"At the moment, we want to put pressure on FIFA and the South African governement via the media, to make supporters throughout the world aware of the issue," said ITUC spokesman Mathieu Debroux.

If concerns are unheeded, "other means of pressure" such as a mass petition, would be rolled out, he said.

As well as ensuring that the construction workers are paid a decent wage, the ITUC wants assurances about on-site safety conditions as well the provisions for anyone injured in a work accident.

Maskimovic said the federation is hoping for a more co-operative relationship with the South Africa government, a tripartite alliance which includes the Confederation of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), than it received ahead of the 2004 Olymics in Athens.

"The IOC (International Olympic Committee) didn't play the game," she said.

Authorities in Beijing, venue for the 2008 Olympic Games, last month ordered developers of all new building projects to provide accident insurance to construction workers, after it was reported nearly 700,000 were not covered.

The mayor of Johannesburg said last week that renovations to the FNB stadium, which will host the opening ceremony and final, should start on February 1 and finish by March 2009.

Matches are also due to be played in Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Rustenburg, Polokwane and Nelspruit.

ROUNDUP: Nadal Squeezes Through In Murray Marathon
Rafael Nadal had to struggle on Monday to fight off an upset charge from Briton Andy Murray, with the second-seeded prodigy scraping to a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 , 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open,

The success nudged Spain's Nadal to his best career showing at the event, with Murray failing to become the first Brit to reach the last eight in 22 years.

The first career meeting between Barcelona-trained Murray and Mallorca-born Nadal ran the distance, with Nadal forced to recover after Murray lifted the first set in a tiebreaker.

The win in more than three hours handed the Spaniard further opportunity to make an impression on fast court after winning back-to-back French Open titles.

Nadal has now won his last five five-set matches.

"It was tough, Andy played at a great level," said the winner. "This was an important match for me.

"I'm very happy. I felt good in the fifth, that was important. He had chances early in the fifth, but I was trying to fight every point.

"That's how I won this match."

Murray and Nadal were the only two players to defeat Roger Federer last season.

Russian women's top seed Maria Sharapova overcame fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva 7-5, 6-3 as the teenager lived up to her seeding. Sharapova is guaranteed to take back the number 1 ranking on Monday after the early exits of Amelie Mauresmo and Svetlana Kuznetsova.

"I felt like it was going to be tough," Sharapova said. "I challenged myself, I wanted to see what I could come up with today.

"It was good to go out there and just finish the match. I was definitely lucky to get out of it the way that I did. I was very pleased with the way things went."

Chile's Fernando Gonzalez ended the eight-match win streak of fifth seed James Blake as he dealt the American a 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (7- 4) defeat.

The success boosted the South American into his first Open round of eight and completed a matched set of Grand Slam quarter-finals for the tenth seed.

Blake had few excuses about why he went off the boil at the crucial moment. "I've gotten better and more mature about not feeling like every single match is the end of the world," said the loser.

"I hope my career won't ever be based on one single match because that would hopefully mean I had a good career, that not one match is going to change that.

'I hope today's doesn't completely change the outlook of my career, that wouldn't be such a good thing."

Blake saved a pair of match points points in the third set before Gonzalez lowered the boom in the tiebreaker.

"He played better today, served better, returned better. I'm sure there's a million reasons, a million excuses I could come up with. That's never been my style, though."

Gonzalez has now won the pair's last four meetings and completed a matched set of quarter-final places at all four of the majors.

Blake, who won the Sydney tournament for the second year running a week ago, remains stalled without a Grand Slam quarter to his name.

German 12th seed Tommy Haas knocked out Argentine David Nalbandian 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.

The victory was Haas' first Grand Slam victory over a Top 10 player after eight failures.

In women's play, Kim Clijsters and three-time champion Martina Hingis set up their second straight meeting in Melbourne.

Clijsters won her ninth match in a row against Daniela Hantuchova with a 6-1, 7-5 fourth-round defeat of the luckless Slovak. Hingis held off China's Li Na to end the Asian challenge at this year's edition with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 comeback.

The experienced Hingis, 26, who won three straight titles at Melbourne Park as a teenager from 1997-1999 and played the next three finals, recovered after dropping the opening set against China's number 1.

The Swiss sixth seed levelled by lifting the second and dominated in the third to pace her victory in one hour, 51 minutes.

Clijsters, set to marry in the summer and retire at age 24 sometime before the end of the year, owns Hingis 3-0 since the Swiss returned to the game a year ago after a three-year retirement.

But past history counts for little to the Belgian, 2005 US Open champion.

"It's always nice if you beat a player, but I've lost to her in the past," warned Clijsters, an overall 4-4 with Hingis.

"Tomorrow's a totally different match, it's the quarter-finals. But that doesn't promise anything. You have to go out there and fight for every point."

The 12th-seeded Anna Chakvetadze kept the Russian revolution alive with her upset of eighth seed Patty Schnyder, which ended on a double-fault 6-4, 6-1.

Oman opens Gulf Cup in style
OMAN kicked off its Gulf Cup of Nations campaign in style overnight, defeating host side the United Arab Emirates 2-1 in the opening match of the tournament in Abu Dhabi.

Kuwait was meanwhile held to a 1-1 draw by Yemen in Group A.

Oman, which has been drawn alongside Australia in Group A of the Asian Cup finals in Bangkok later this year, scored the first goal of the tournament eight minutes before half-time.

Midfield player Fawzi Bashir hit an unstoppable shot past Emirates goalkeeper Majid Naser having ghosted into an unmarked position on the edge of the penalty area.

Striker Imad al-Houssani doubled Oman’s advantage five minutes after the break, given the simple task of tapping the ball past Naser having been played into the penalty area.

The Emirates, drawn alongside Japan in Group B of the Asian Cup, regrouped, and star striker Ismael Matar reduced the deficit 12 minutes later.

He broke through the Oman defence on the right and slotted a shot past goalkeeper Ali Alhabassy.

Australia's future rival nevertheless held on with relative ease to go top of Group A in the Gulf Cup.

Yemen, the lowest-ranked team in the Gulf Cup, meanwhile shocked Kuwait when Ali Omaqi scored in the 17th minute.

Kuwait, which failed to qualify for the Asian Cup finals, having finished last in its group behind Australia and Bahrain, equalised 16 minutes from full-time, Bader al-Mutawaa scoring from the penalty spot.

Victory's sprint to the line
FOR a bloke who doesn't dodge an issue or a challenge, Melbourne Victory captain Kevin Muscat certainly isn't going to duck any criticism.

Which is why Muscat yesterday admitted the pointed criticism from coach Ernie Merrick after last weekend's 2-1 home loss to Queensland Roar was deserved.

"It was fair enough," Muscat said before Victory's first foray into the A-League finals.

"Everyone is subject to criticism when they don't play well. I realised myself it wasn't one of my better games.

"Individually we were below par and therefore, collectively, we were very average on the night.

"Every week, whether we win or lose, we dissect the game and focus on a number of things. We need to focus on the basics.

"From here on in it's a totally different competition. It's a sprint, if you like, the lottery of winning the finals, and we want to be in the mix."

Merrick was unhappy with the performances of about eight players who deviated from the team's plan in the loss to Roar, perhaps falling into the trap of trying to do too much when it would have been easier to share the load with teammates.

There is no question a better performance will be on the cards against Newcastle Jets tomorrow night at Energy Australia Stadium as Victory collects the premiership trophy and ends a regular season it has dominated.

It also signals the start in earnest of Victory's finals campaign, which has been a month in preparation and 12 months in the making as the players and coaching staff lived with the pain of finishing a dismal seventh last season.

"We missed playing in the finals last year and that hurt," Muscat said.

"Coming away from that we learnt so much, and obviously this season has been so different for us.

"We want to hit the ground running in the finals and maintain the form we've had throughout the season. (Finals are) where you want to be. This season's been a fairytale one for us, but by no means is it finished.

"We've still got a lot of work to do."

The real work starts next weekend with the first leg of the semi-final against the side that finishes second on the A-League table. Adelaide United is favourite to finish second behind Victory.

"Now it's only 12 or 14 days away, it has started to creep in that all of a sudden we will be playing in front of a huge crowd in the finals," Muscat said yesterday. "We're looking forward to it."

Victory will name a 16-man squad for tomorrow night's game, with Steve Pantelidis and Simon Storey left out to avoid a fourth yellow card and suspension.

Striker James Robinson will miss his second straight game, and one more omission will be made today or tomorrow.

Materazzi Appears Before FIFA Over Zidane Incident
Italy defender Marco Materazzi appeared before disciplinary committee of the governing body FIFA which is investigating his role in the sending off of Frenchman Zinedine Zidane during the World Cup final.

FIFA opened its investigation against Materazzi on Thursday after Zidane said Wednesday that provokations from Materazzi made him lose his temper and head-butt the Italian in the chest.

Zidane, who was playing his last match as a professional footballer, was sent off in extra-time of the match for the incident which went unnoticed by the referee and linesman but was observed by the fourth official, according to FIFA.

Italy went on to win a fourth World Cup title on penalties after a 1-1 deadlock from 120 minutes of play last Sunday in Berlin.

Zidane said Materazzi insulted his mother and sister. Materazzi acknowledged to have insulted Zidane but insisted he didn't use foul language against his mother.

FIFA originally had planned written statements from both players before a face-to-face meeting and the verdict both set for July 20. Materazzi appeared as early as Friday because he was due to go on a post-World Cup holiday.

Zidane has so far not appeared before FIFA.

Materazzi faces a ban if found guilty, but the length of it depends on what he said.

Materazzi's lawyer, meanwhile, told the BBC that a ban would set a dangerous precedent and that only Zidane should be sanctioned - which would have no consequences because he has retired.

"If they want to attack a player for what he keeps saying on the pitch, they will be very busy in the future because it's quite normal that players shout to each other in a game - especially when it's such a stressful game," Materazzi's agent Claudio Vigorelli said.

Materazzi cited an example from Euro 2004 where Italy captain Francesco Totti was sent off and banned for three games for spitting at Danish player Christian Poulsen.

"I wonder why FIFA didn't open up a case against Poulsen two years ago in the European Championships in Portugal after the reaction of Totti.

"Totti was banned for four games, which was reduced to three, and nothing happened to Poulsen - this is absolutely a similar case," he said.

Japan midfielder Yuki Abe has completed a record move to Urawa Reds, the J-League champions said on Monday. The highly rated 25-year-old joined Urawa from JEF United Chiba for a transfer fee of around $3 million, the highest sum ever paid for a Japanese player in a domestic deal. Abe has scored 36 goals in 214 J-League appearances but missed out on a place in Japan's 2006 World Cup squad. He has since become an integral part of the Japanese squad under current coach Ivica Osim, who used to manage Abe's former team JEF United.

BRAZILIAN striker Anderson has signed a contract to play for J-League second division club Sagan Tosu, club officials said today (AEDT).

The 25-year-old forward, whose complete name is Anderson Andrade Antones, played the 2006 season for fellow second division club Mito Hollyhock and scored 17 goals in 43 games.

"I'm going to do my best to help the team to be promoted to the first division," said Anderson, whose contract runs until January 1 next year.

Tosu finished fourth with 22 wins, 13 draws and 13 defeats in the 13-team second division league last season.

German Coaches See Bremen-Bayern Duel For Bundesliga Title
Werder Bremen are narrowly tipped to beat champions Bayern Munich to the German league title in a Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa survey of Bundesliga coaches.

Seven of the 18 coaches see current league leaders Werder going on to win the league which resumes on January 26 after the winter break.

Five predict Bayern, who trail Werder by three points, will be able to defend their title, while the remainder see an even race.

In a survey by Kicker sports magazine, almost 60 per cent of 270 players players asked tipped Werder to win the league with just under 30 per cent favouring Bayern.

Few coaches or players regard Schalke 04 - currently second level on points with Werder - as a serious title contender.

Before the season started, a similar survey of coaches predicted either Werder Bremen or Bayern Munich would win the league.

Only two other clubs were mentioned as contenders - Schalke 04 and SV Hamburg who are relegation candidates, second to bottom of the table.

Former Bundesliga Coach Badly Injured By Uprooted Tree In Storm
Helmut Schulte, a former Bundesliga football coach who now is in charge of junior teams at Schalke 04, has been severely hurt during the storm which raged on Thursday across Germany.

Schalke on Friday confirmed a report of the Bild daily that an uprooted tree crashed onto Schulte's car and that the coach was rushed to the intensive care unit of a local hospital after being freed from the wreckage by firemen.

"All we know that he has been hurt very badly. We are in contact with the doctors bit don't know the exact nature of his injuries," Bild quoted Schulte's brother Manfred Schulte as saying.

Schulte coached three Bundesliga clubs in the late 1980s and early 1990s: St. Pauli Hamburg, Dynamo Dresden and Schalke.

The storm Thursday left 11 people dead in Germany, caused damage estimated at billions of euros and forced national railways to halt all operations for the first time in its history.

Nadal challenge will provide real gauge of Murray's progress

For the eleventh time in the open era, a British man faces one of the top two seeds in the Australian Open and it is unlikely that any match — even the 1977 final in Kooyong, when John Lloyd should not have lost to the late, lamented Vitas Gerulaitis — can have captured the imagination as completely as Andy Murray’s collision with Rafael Nadal this morning under the lights of the Rod Laver Arena.

From Gerald Battrick’s third-round match against Tony Roche, the No 1 seed in 1970, to Greg Rusedski’s meeting six years ago with Gustavo Kuerten, when the Brazilian was the world No 1 and Rusedski won 9-7 in the fifth set, the draws are liberally sprinkled with such compelling jousts.

Yet there is something about Murray versus Nadal that excites and fascinates like no other. There are few in the corridors of Melbourne Park willing to pin their colours totally to the British No 1’s mast but, equally, no one can bring themselves to write him off. The two have not met, the Spanish No 2 seed has never lost on the tour to a younger player, Murray does not understand what subservience means and theirs is a resplendent contrast of styles and characters.

“A beautiful match-up,” Jim Courier, the former world No 1 and champion here in 1992 and 1993, said last night. “Murray is a cagey counter-puncher who misses very infrequently and knows how to construct points, but he hasn’t played anyone with the ability to overpower him, which Nadal has. This will be a big ask physically and we’ll discover if he did the work in the off-season he said he did.

“It looks as if he is much stronger, he’s playing beautifully, he’s thumping guys. It’s good for him that this is happening in ’07 because he would have been manhandled by Nadal if it had been a match-up a year ago. I don’t think that will happen now. But Nadal is suited by the court, he’s fast, he’s intimidating. Brad Gilbert [Murray’s coach] is a positive influence and one of his strengths is his ability to break down opponents and offer a set plan for his man to work to. I’m keen to see what that plan is.

“The other guys feel that Murray’s not going to miss and that unless they do something extra, he’s going to hurt them. He is so good on defence, getting the ball into awkward spots, and he has a really strong court sense. That’s something no one can teach.”

That the fourth-round match will be played late in the evening local time offers Murray a subtle advantage, because Nadal would have felt happier with the midday sun beating down as if he were at home in Majorca.

What will not fail Murray is his mental toughness. As one of his compatriots said this week, “there is not a match in this championship he will not be sick if he doesn’t win”. There you have a snapshot of the 19-year-old, who really has nothing to lose today except a little of his dignity. Murray is the last Scot in the championship from the four who began it at various levels: main draw, qualifying, doubles and juniors. Graeme Dyce, the red-haired 17-year-old — coached in his formative years by Judy Murray, Andy’s mother — lost in the first round of the junior event in three sets to Lazaré Kukhalashvili, from Georgia.

Kukhalashvili, 15, travelled here as a member of an LTA group and has shared digs with Dyce and Dan Cox for three weeks. Recently denied a second working visa to the United States, where he had been practising at the Nick Bollettieri Academy, he came to West London before Christmas to train at Queen’s Club, under the auspices of the LTA.

Negotiations are continuing between the association and Kukhalashvili’s management about him qualifying for residency and, possibly, playing for Great Britain one day. Both sides are said to be serious. From first impressions yesterday — the boy is fast, his ground strokes pack a punch and he has great spirit — he is worth checking out.

Alex Bogdanovic, the British No 3, has decided to part company with Mike Raphael, his coach, after a defeat in the first round of qualifying here. It would appear that the LTA has a ready-made replacement in Peter Lundgren, who has a contract to work 35 weeks a year in British tennis.

Bonds back in the hot seat over failed test
It is a story that relegated even the signing of David Beckham to second place on the sports networks in the United States. Barry Bonds tested positive for amphetamines last season and initially blamed it on a San Francisco Giants team-mate, according to a report in yesterday’s Daily News (New York).

The newspaper claimed that, when caught by Major League Baseball’s doping investigators, Bonds blamed it on a substance he had taken from the locker of Mark Sweeney, a team-mate. Bonds’s agent, Jeff Borris, offered “no comment”, while Sweeney’s agent, Barry Axelrod, said that his client “did not give Barry Bonds anything and there was nothing he could have given Barry Bonds”.

Bonds, one of the most famous and controversial sportsmen in the US, has lived with accusations of drug abuse for years because of his links with figures implicated in the Balco steroids distribution case and because he became a more potent hitter than ever in his mid-to-late thirties, breaking the single-season home-run record in 2001.

Various drugs allegations, largely ignored in the 1990s, when muscular sluggers were fashionable, have severely dented baseball’s credibility. Bonds is routinely booed by opposition fans and Mark McGwire, whose record Bonds broke and who is suspected of steroid use in the 1990s, when baseball had no rules against it, failed to reach the Hall of Fame this week, apparently because voters felt that he was not of sufficient character.

Apart from further damage to his reputation, if true, these latest allegations could cause legal trouble for Bonds. A federal grand jury is investigating whether he perjured himself when testifying in the Balco case in 2003 that he never knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs.

Under baseball’s amphetamines policy, players are not publicly identified for a first positive test. A second failed test for amphetamines results in a 25-game suspension. The first positive steroids test results in a 50-game ban.

The Daily News said that Bonds did not appeal the positive test, which made him subject to six drugs tests by MLB over the next six months.

The 42-year-old, who has hit 734 home runs, 21 shy of Hank Aaron’s all-time record, is negotiating a one-year contract extension with the Giants worth about £9 million.

Raikkonen quick to fire back at McLaren over his fitness to replace Schumacher
There is a saying in Formula One that underneath every Finn there is a shark. In the spectacular setting of one of Italy’s most well-appointed ski resorts, Kimi Raikkonen did his bit to endorse the sentiment behind that adage yesterday as he flashed his teeth and ripped into his former employers at McLaren Mercedes.

After Raikkonen’s departure from the Woking-based team at the end of last season, there has been a whispering campaign against the “Flying Finn”, with some prominent voices in Formula One questioning whether he has the right attitude and the selfdiscipline to carry on at Ferrari where Michael Schumacher left off.

Athough Raikkonen is regarded as the fastest driver on the grid, he is known to enjoy a drink and he can be a stubborn character who is resistant to advice from others. He is also not a noted communicator. This season is going to be tough on him, with high expectations from the Italian public and media and a team-mate in Felipe Massa, who is determined to be Ferrari’s No 1.

Every year Ferrari decamp to this charming resort in the Dolomites (where snow is a precious commodity but where bears have been spotted on the piste in recent days), to introduce their drivers for the season ahead. With Schumacher trying to come to terms with retirement, this was Raikkonen’s turn to take centre stage.

Last season, the “Kimster” displayed poor body language and unconcealed boredom at McLaren press conferences, but he looked more upbeat as he made his first appearance in the red and white of the Scuderia, who are thought to be paying him in the region of $60 million (about £31 million) over the next three years. He even tried an Italian “hello” to his future friends and foes in the local media, but there was nothing over the top from a man succinctly described by Martin Brundle as “low voltage”.

For the most part, in his appearance in the resort’s convention centre, Raikkonen kept to his usual clipped style. He spoke of his hopes that things will go well for him — although he was not rash enough to promise a title in his first season with the team — he talked about a friendly relationship with Massa and how he looked forward to working with Schumacher, who has an advisory role in the background.

Shortly before the session ended, he was asked about his attitude, his approach to training and suggestions that “some at McLaren” believe that Raikkonen’s way might not fit in with how Ferrari do things and that he may have to adjust his style. Raikkonen’s ears pricked up and the PR-speak was put to one side as the Finn seized the opportunity to get a few things off his chest.

“I don’t know what McLaren has said or what they think,” he said. “I don’t know how they can say things about things they don’t know about, about how things are at Ferrari. In general, I’m not going to change my way. It’s been working well enough — it’s the way I want to do things.”

Then he tackled the insinuation behind the question head on. “I don’t think even if I had changed my style to the way they wanted to do things it would have changed the results because the problems weren’t really about how I did my training or what I do in my private life,” Raikkonen said. “It was much more the car not lasting the race or it wasn’t quick enough. So, in that way, I don’t really mind what they say.”

There is no love lost between Raikkonen and his erstwhile employers, for whom he drove for five years and scored nine wins. One suspects that he will get more pleasure out of beating McLaren this season than any other team. Raikkonen finished his exposition by saying that he sees no problems in his relationship with Ferrari — he implied the team are much easier to work with than McLaren — and he is not daunted by the prospect of taking over from Schumacher. “I’m not Michael Schumacher and the team don’t expect me to be,” he said.

Bank of Valletta Premier League: Floriana and Hibs in dire need of points as they face crucial matches today
Floriana and Hibernians will be searching for vital points this afternoon at Ta’ Qali as the Premier League enters a crucial phase, where the clubs jockey for position – either in the Championship Pool or the Relegation Pool in the second phase.

Everyone must be aware that the Top Six will play in the Championship Pool, while the remaining four will take part in the Relegation Pool.

At present, the battle is raging in mid-table for at least two places in the Championship Pool. With nine points still available for most of the teams, Valletta, Birkirkara, Hibernians and Floriana are separated by seven points and anything can happen yet. However, Valletta and Hibernians have played a match fewer than the Stripes and the Greens. Valletta have 27 points, Birkirkara 24, Hibernians 21 and Floriana 20.

From the above statistics it is evident that Hibernians and Floriana cannot really afford to miss out this weekend, especially Floriana who, if defeated, will only have Hibernians to contend with.

In fact, a victory for Birkirkara will assure not only the Stripes, but also Valletta, of a place in the Championship Pool.

The Stripes today will possibly have most of their players available and they will be expected to maintain the momentum they have obtained in the past few matches when they started climbing up the table consistently.

They will start favourites against the Greens today, not only because of current form, but also because Floriana will have to face their rivals without international defender Ian Azzopardi, and striker Manolito Micallef – both suspended in midweek.

In the second match today, Valletta will know their fate from the result of the previous match. A defeat for Birkirkara means that they will also have to beat Hibernians to assure themselves of a place in the Championship Pool, even if it appears unlikely that they will fail to win the necessary points in their remaining matches.

Hibernians will be facing a lot more trouble if they do not win today’s match, especially if Floriana manage to overcome Birkirkara. That would mean the Greens would overtake them in the standings, though the Paolites would have one match in hand.

Tomorrow, Msida have another chance to bridge the gap with inactive leaders Marsaxlokk as they take on St George’s. But after the 2-2 draw against Sliema last week, the Saints will now look forward to causing another upset against the second placed Msida.

In the final match on the programme, Pieta will be looking forward to maintain their recent improvement as they face Marsa. It is a relegation match where points will be important for second phase purposes.

McClaren allows room for potential
STEVE McCLAREN may have his faults, but the England head coach could not be accused of failing to give himself options when he announced his squad yesterday for the friendly against Holland at the Amsterdam ArenA on Wednesday. He named 28 players in his travelling party, of which only 17 can take part in the match.

After disappointing displays in the European Championship qualifying campaign last month, McClaren could have been expected to shuffle his pack. However, after the draw at home to Macedonia and defeat in Croatia, only Kieran Richardson, the Manchester United midfield player, has been dropped.

Joe Cole, Aaron Lennon and Andrew Johnson have been recalled after injury, with all of them possible starters against Holland, while McClaren has also found places for potential.

Micah Richards, Michael Dawson and Ben Foster have yet to be capped at senior international level, but should benefit from the trip even if not used.

Richards, 18, of Manchester City, is tipped as a possible successor to Gary Neville at right back, but can also play in central defence. Were he to make his debut, he would be the youngest defender to earn a senior cap, beating the record of Rio Ferdinand, who played against Cameroon at 19 years and 8 days.

“I’ve watched Micah play a number of times and he’s a strong, quick and athletic player who has really impressed with City this season,” McClaren said. “This match provides us with a great opportunity to have a look at him over the next few days. He fully deserves his chance.”

Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool midfield player, appears certain to return to the starting line-up after suspension. With Lennon a possible inclusion on the right flank, McClaren could abandon his experiment of playing Gerrard in a wide role and return him to the middle.
