National Basketball Association: A Brief History
It is widely believed that James Naismith invented the game of Basketball in 1891 while working at the YMCA College in Springfield, MA. Triangle magazine in Springfield, MA first established the rules for basketball in 1892 and 18 basketball students from the Springfield YMCA played the first official basketball game in 1893. The University of Chicago played its first college basketball game in 1894, defeating the Chicago YMCA team 19-11.
The first college basketball game was played in 1895 as Minnesota State School of farming overcame the Porkers of Hamline College, 9-3. In 1896, the first five person college basketball game was played in Iowa City, Iowa. The University of Chicago beat the University of Iowa by a score of 15-12. Intercollegiate basketball was played for the first time when Wesleyan University beat Yale 4-3 in New Haven, Connecticut.
